Femke has over 15 years of experience within the field of epidemiology and over 5 years of experience in translating mathematical models and complex data sets into easy to understand messages to guide future policy design. For example, a recent feasibility study for Defra shows how complex mathematical models can be converted into simple rules of thumb and used to provide guidance on whether the use of a diagnostic can provide economic value within early detection monitoring programs. Furthermore, findings from her work on fungicide resistance are now informing and influencing practical decision making, in liaison with FRAG, FRAC (representing the crop protection industry), EPPO and CRD.
As the lead modeller for the Centre of Plant Health and Crop Protection (CHAP; one of the 4 recently established UK Agri-Tech Centres) Femke is developing mathematical models to support a national real-time biotic crop threat network that seeks to address integrated approaches to management of crop weeds, pests and diseases. Femke has authored or co-authored over 20 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters.
