As well as accredited analyses for a range of matrices from food producing animals. Fera also provide bespoke method development solutions and un-accredited analyses for other analyte/matrix combinations. Processed meat and samples high in fat may present an analytical challenge and require additional method development prior to analysis and as such cannot always be analysed using accredited methodology. Please get in touch using the contact details on this page to confirm testing requirements and accreditation status if unsure.
Fera’s ISO 17025 accreditation status can be found at https://www.ukas.com/download-schedule/1642/Testing/.
Fera’s food safety experts use accredited analytical methods to detect and quantify thyrostatic residues. Our analysis provides clear evidence to support regulatory compliance and confirm the absence of prohibited substances in food-producing animals.
Thyrostats inhibit the production of thyroid hormones and can induce weight gain through increased water retention. Their use is banned in the European Union under Council Directive 96/22/EC. As a result, no Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs) are defined in Commission Regulation (EU) 37/2010. Instead, Minimum Method Performance Requirements (MMPRs) apply to compounds such as Thiouracil, Methylthiouracil, Propylthiouracil, Tapazole (Methimazole), Benzylthiouracil and Mercaptobenzimidazole under Commission Regulation (EU) 2019/1871.
This screen includes the following compounds: 2-Thiouracil, 6-Methyl-2-thiouracil, 6-Phenyl-2-thiouracil, 6-Propyl-2-thiouracil and Methimazole (Tapazole).
Testing is typically undertaken on urine samples from food-producing animals including cattle, sheep and pigs.
The analytical method is based on sample extraction with derivatisation using iodobenyl bromide, followed by liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS). Methods are validated in accordance with Commission Decision 2002/657/EC and accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS).
