As well as accredited analyses for a range of matrices from food producing animals. Fera also provide bespoke method development solutions and un-accredited analyses for other analyte/matrix combinations. Processed meat and samples high in fat may present an analytical challenge and require additional method development prior to analysis and as such cannot always be analysed using accredited methodology. Please get in touch using the contact details on this page to confirm testing requirements and accreditation status if unsure.
Fera’s ISO 17025 accreditation status can be found at https://www.ukas.com/download-schedule/1642/Testing/.
Fera’s food safety experts use accredited analytical methods to detect and quantify nitroimidazole residues across a wide range of food matrices. Our analysis provides the robust evidence required to support regulatory compliance and protect consumers.
Nitroimidazoles are antiprotozoal and antibacterial compounds that were previously used, for example, to control histomoniasis in poultry. Their use as veterinary medicines is now prohibited in the European Union due to concerns around consumer safety. Monitoring focuses on each compound’s hydroxy metabolite where applicable.
This screen includes the following nitroimidazoles: Dimetridazole / Hydroxydimetridazole, Ipronidazole / Hydroxyipronidazole, Metronidazole / Hydroxymetronidazole and Ronidazole. Fera can test a wide range of matrices, including poultry, eggs, aquaculture products, milk, casings and water.
No Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs) are set in Commission Regulation (EU) 37/2010 for nitroimidazoles. Minimum Method Performance Requirements (MMPRs) apply to these compounds and their hydroxy metabolites under EU reference laboratory guidance.
The analytical method is based on sample extraction using QuEChERS methodology with additional SPE clean-up, followed by liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS). Methods are validated in accordance with Commission Decision 2002/657/EC and accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS).
Confirmatory Analysis
