As well as accredited analyses for a range of matrices from food producing animals. Fera also provide bespoke method development solutions and un-accredited analyses for other analyte/matrix combinations. Processed meat and samples high in fat may present an analytical challenge and require additional method development prior to analysis and as such cannot always be analysed using accredited methodology. Please get in touch using the contact details on this page to confirm testing requirements and accreditation status if unsure.

Fera’s ISO 17025 accreditation status can be found at https://www.ukas.com/download-schedule/1642/Testing/.

Fera’s food safety experts use accredited analytical methods to detect and quantify nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) residues across a wide range of food matrices. Our analysis provides the clear, defensible evidence required to verify compliance with veterinary medicine residue regulations.

NSAIDs are used in veterinary medicine to treat a range of conditions, including colic and musculoskeletal disorders in horses, infectious diseases in cattle (as pain and inflammation relievers), and mastitis in sows and dairy cows. Their use is strictly controlled to protect consumers from exposure to residues.

Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs) for authorised NSAIDs are defined in Commission Regulation (EU) 37/2010 for muscle, fat, liver, kidney and milk across a range of food-producing species. Some NSAIDs are not authorised for use in food-producing animals; for these compounds, Minimum Method Performance Requirements (MMPRs) are defined in EURL guidance.

This test screens for the following NSAIDs: Carprofen, Diclofenac, Flunixin, 5-Hydroxyflunixin, Ibuprofen, Ketoprofen, Meloxicam, Naproxen, Niflumic acid, Oxyphenylbutazone, Phenylbutazone, Tolfenamic acid and Vedaprofen.

The analytical method is based on sample extraction with extensive clean-up using liquid–liquid extraction (LLE) and solid-phase extraction (SPE), followed by liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS).

All methods are validated in accordance with Commission Decision 2002/657/EC and accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS).
