The use of thyrostats is banned within the EU under Council Directive 96/22/EC. As such, no Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs) are defined in Commission Regulation (EU) 37/2010 for thyrostats due to the risk they pose to human health. There is, however, guidance on Minimum Method Performance Requirements (MMPRs) for certain thyrostats, including Thiouracil, Methylthiouracil, Propylthiouracil, Tapazole (Methimazole), Benzylthiouracil and Mercaptobenzimidazole, as outlined in Commission Regulation (EU) 2019/1871.
This test screens for the presence of the following compounds: 2-Thiouracil, 6-Methyl-2-thiouracil, 6-Phenyl-2-thiouracil, 6-Propyl-2-thiouracil and Methimazole (Tapazole).
This test is typically carried out in urine samples only.
The analytical method used at Fera is based on sample extraction with derivatisation using iodobenzyl bromide. Testing is then carried out using liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS).
