Tiamulin is a member of the pleuromutilin class of antibiotic drugs and is used in the treatment of bacterial infections, particularly in pigs and poultry, including swine dysentery and respiratory diseases in pigs, poultry and rabbits.

Tiamulin is typically administered through drinking water or medicated feed. A key consideration when using this compound is its adverse and potentially fatal interaction with other veterinary medicine residues, such as coccidiostats and ionophores.

Regulatory limits strictly control the use of tiamulin, with Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs) defined in Commission Regulation (EU) 37/2010 for a range of food-producing species. MRLs have been established in muscle, skin/fat, liver and eggs. The defined marker residue for tiamulin in eggs is the parent compound, while its major metabolite, 8-α-hydroxymutilin, is the marker residue used for other tissues.

The analytical method used at Fera is based on extraction and derivatisation to 8-α-hydroxymutilin (for all matrices except egg), with testing carried out using liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS).

Fera’s food safety experts use established, accredited analytical testing methods to detect and quantify tiamulin and its major metabolite within your food samples. We provide the evidence required by regulators to verify that levels of tiamulin within your food products are compliant.

Our analytical methods are validated in accordance with the principles set out in Commission Decision 2002/657/EC and accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS).

Confirmatory Analysis

Where required, confirmatory analysis is charged at the same rate as the primary test. We will contact you before proceeding. Confirmatory results will be delivered within 10 working days of your instruction.
