Veterinary medicines such as anthelmintics and coccidiostats play a key role in preventing and treating parasitic infections, supporting animal health and welfare. As a result, they are widely used in agriculture.
Some other veterinary medicines, including sedatives, can produce physiological effects in humans when consumed at elevated levels. Monitoring these residues at trace concentrations is therefore essential to protect consumers and meet regulatory requirements.
Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs) for anthelmintics, coccidiostats and sedatives are defined in Commission Regulation (EU) 37/2010. Monitoring residues from authorised medicines ensures that products exceeding legal limits do not enter the food chain.
The analytical method used at Fera is based on QuEChERS extraction followed by liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS). Methods are validated in accordance with Commission Decision 2002/657/EC and accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS).
