As well as accredited analyses for a range of matrices from food producing animals. Fera also provide bespoke method development solutions and un-accredited analyses for other analyte/matrix combinations. Processed meat and samples high in fat may present an analytical challenge and require additional method development prior to analysis and as such cannot always be analysed using accredited methodology. Please get in touch using the contact details on this page to confirm testing requirements and accreditation status if unsure.

Fera’s ISO 17025 accreditation status can be found at https://www.ukas.com/download-schedule/1642/Testing/.

Fera’s food safety experts use accredited analytical methods to detect and quantify tiamulin and its major metabolite across a wide range of food matrices. Our analysis provides the clear, defensible evidence required to demonstrate regulatory compliance.

Tiamulin is a pleuromutilin antibiotic used primarily in pigs, poultry and rabbits to treat infections such as swine dysentery and respiratory disease. It is typically administered through medicated feed or drinking water. A key consideration is its potentially severe interaction with certain veterinary medicines, including coccidiostats and ionophores.

Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs) for tiamulin are defined in Commission Regulation (EU) 37/2010 for muscle, skin/fat, liver and eggs. The marker residue is parent tiamulin in eggs, and 8-α-hydroxymutilin in all other tissues.

The analytical method used at Fera involves extraction and derivatisation to 8-α-hydroxymutilin (for all matrices except egg), followed by liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS). Methods are validated in accordance with Commission Decision 2002/657/EC and accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS).

Confirmatory Analysis

Where required, confirmatory analysis is charged at the same rate as the primary test. We will contact you before proceeding. Confirmatory results will be delivered within 10 working days of your instruction.
