As well as accredited analyses for a range of matrices from food producing animals. Fera also provide bespoke method development solutions and un-accredited analyses for other analyte/matrix combinations. Processed meat and samples high in fat may present an analytical challenge and require additional method development prior to analysis and as such cannot always be analysed using accredited methodology. Please get in touch using the contact details on this page to confirm testing requirements and accreditation status if unsure.
Fera’s ISO 17025 accreditation status can be found at https://www.ukas.com/download-schedule/1642/Testing/.
Fera’s food safety experts use accredited analytical methods to detect and quantify quinolone and fluoroquinolone residues across a wide range of food matrices. Our analysis provides clear, defensible evidence to support regulatory compliance.
Quinolones are broad-spectrum antibiotics used to treat bacterial infections in many food-producing animals. While they offer important benefits for disease control, widespread use across the agri-food sector can increase the risk of consumer exposure to residues.
Residues of veterinary medicines may cause physiological effects in humans when consumed at elevated levels. This has created a need for sensitive analytical testing capable of detecting quinolones at trace concentrations in food.
Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs) for quinolones are defined in Commission Regulation (EU) 37/2010 for muscle, skin/fat, liver, kidney and milk in a range of food-producing species.
This screen includes the following compounds: Ciprofloxacin, Danofloxacin, Difloxacin, Enrofloxacin, Flumequine, Marbofloxacin, Nalidixic acid, Norfloxacin, Oxolinic acid and Sarafloxacin.
Fera can analyse poultry, game, red meat, offal, shellfish, fish, eggs, honey and milk to ensure your products do not breach regulatory limits for quinolone residues.
The analytical method is based on sample extraction using QuEChERS methodology, followed by liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS). Methods are validated in accordance with Commission Decision 2002/657/EC and accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS).
